If you've been holding out for that sequel to 1985's The Goonies, Corey Feldman may have just dashed all of your hopes for its arrival. Feldman, who played Mouth in the film, believes that a sequel can't happen anymore despite cast participation.
Feldman was speaking with "Dread Central" recently and he opened up about the sequel which has been rumored to be in the works for years. Feldman made it clear that the actors are on board but his excitement for the sequel dwindles with each passing year and he gives a few reasons as to why the follow-up just won't happen.
"I don't know what the hell it is. But all I know is that when I found out my dear friend Richard Donner had signed on to do Lethal Weapon 5 as his swan song, well, that pretty much sewed up the rumor mill right there. It's done. We can't make [The Goonies 2] without [Donner]. And [Donner's] off shooting guns with the Lethal Weapon people."
Richard Donner is the director of the original film and he's up there in age at 91-years old. There has been every indication that Lethal Weapon 5 will be his last film once it gets into production and, given the fact that Feldman believes a sequel can't happen without Donner, that is why he doesn't think the film is in the cards. This has to be particularly frustrating because Chris Columbus reportedly has been working on a script and the rest of the cast is game to get things underway.
The Goonies also stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Joe Pantoliano, Jeff Cohen, Robert Davi, Anne Ramsey, and Martha Plimpton. The film follows a group of misfit kids who set out on a journey after finding an ancient map they believe will lead them to a long-lost pirate treasure. The movie went on to become the 9th highest-grossing film of 1985 and it was well-received by critics and moviegoers. In the years since its release, the film's fanbase only grows as it captivates a new generation through theatrical re-releases, home video, and numerous airings on television.
Perhaps the universe is just letting us know we don't NEED a sequel to The Goonies. A lot of years have passed since the first film and some movies just work the best standing on their own. While it would be fun to get the gang back together, memories of the original film may be the only thing we need.
