There was buzz that Scarlett Johansson‘s voice work in Spike Jonze‘s HER was fantastic enough to get her a nomination come awards time. However, no one was talking about how it was possible that she may not get nominated at all–and she’s not going to be at least at one ceremony.
The Golden Globes have declared that Johansson’s vocal performance is ineligible for a Best Supporting Actress nomination. This even after an appeal from Warner Brothers.
Is a ruling like this one fair? Depends on your thinking. Some say that since it is a partial performance that this ultimately disqualifies her. However, the other half is arguing that the beauty of a performance like this one lies in her ability to do so much with only her voice. The objective in HER is that Joaquin Phoenix‘s character is falling in love with just a voice– an operating system that has no true grasp on human emotion.
Should we discredit performances like Johansson’s just because she is not there in body? The good news is that the actress still has a chance at the Oscars and SAG awards which have both ruled that her performance is eligible for nomination.
HER will make a limited release on December 18, 2013.
