While star and executive producer Wendi McLendon-Covey recently inked a new deal with producers Sony TV for a potential return to The Goldbergs, the renewal for season 10 wasn’t made official…until now! The hit ABC comedy series will be back for a tenth season on the network, per Deadline.
The deal that Wendi McLendon-Covey signed just last month included a nice pay bump and even an option for an eleventh season should ABC go through with one. This could be why the renewal news didn’t come with the caveat that it would be the last. If the show continues to perform well, ABC is likely to keep it around.
The Goldbergs is now a part of an exclusive television club with other live-action network comedies that have run for ten years or more such as Friends, Married … With Children, The Jeffersons, Cheers, Frasier, M*A*S*H, Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Will & Grace. That’s a pretty cool club to be a part of with some top-notch and game-changing sitcoms.
The Goldbergs had to weather some storms that had it on the bubble for a return until Wendi McLendon-Covey signed her new deal. An HR investigation sparked by multiple complaints regarding former star Jeff Garlin’s behavior led to his departure this season. The show also had to write in the passing of George Segal (who played the much-beloved Pops) into the series. Despite all the challenges, the show continues to thrive.
The series is a semiautobiographical comedy based on the childhood of series creator Adam F. Goldberg. The show also stars Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, and Sam Lerner. Even though the series is heading towards its tenth year, it still remains one of ABC’s more popular shows. The Goldbergs currently averages a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and just over 4 million viewers per episode in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings.
