It's been over a decade since our last dive into the magical world of high-stakes heists and quippy dialogue, but the OCEAN'S franchise is set to return next month with an entirely new group of criminals embarking on a risky heist. Serving as a spin-off of the main series, OCEAN'S 8 stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, a recently released convict who winds up being just as eager to get back into the heist game as her brother, Danny Ocean (George Clooney). In order to snag $150 million worth of diamonds at the Met Gala, Debbie assembles her own crew consisting of Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. Sure, the Gary Ross (THE HUNGER GAMES) film doesn't appear to be doing anything entirely new with the formula, but OCEAN'S 8 does look like a good time, and early projections are already hinting that it may score big at the box-office. Can OCEAN'S 9 and 10 be far behind?
The official synopsis for OCEAN'S 8:
Five years, eight months, 12 days…and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock)—just released from prison—has been concocting the greatest heist of her storied career. She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her former partner-in-crime Lou (Cate Blanchett). Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita (Kaling); street con Constance (Awkwafina); expert fence Tammy (Paulson); hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna); and fashion designer Rose Weil (Bonham Carter). The target is $150 million in diamonds—diamonds that will adorn the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger (Hathaway), who will be center stage at the event of the year, the Met Gala. Their plan appears rock solid, but it will need to be flawless if the team is to get in and get away—all in plain sight.
OCEAN'S 8 will hit theaters on June 8, 2018.
