As the Big Game draws near you can anticipate an onslaught of “clever” commercials (they better be at $4 million a pop for airtime) and this one fits squarely in that category. Take a look:
Matthew Broderick reprises his role as Ferris Bueller in this ad for Honda’s CRV, which is a pretty cool idea, although the execution felt a bit off for me. The distance between the first time Broderick played Bueller to now is definitely felt. Plus, he’s missing his “crew” which just doesn’t seem right. And as “family friendly” and “fuel efficient” as the CRV may be, it’s still a major step down from a Ferrari.
Regardless, it’s still a fun little marketing ploy and I think most people will dig it. I could think of a lot more terrible ways to promote a car. The ad is directed by Todd Philips (THE HANGOVER) as part of Honda CR-V’s “Leap List” campaign, which encourages people to do things they’ve always wanted to do. Like driving a Honda CRV and having a car payment. Yippie!
