Up until now, The Forever Purge (which reaches theatres tomorrow, July 2nd) has been promoted as being the final chapter in the Purge franchise. Genre fans know never to believe it when something is being called the final chapter, and it turns out that Purge creator James DeMonaco – who has written every film in the series and also directed the first three – already has an idea for another sequel beyond this one.
Speaking with Daily Dead while doing press for The Forever Purge, DeMonaco revealed that he's ready to get to work writing the script for what we'll call The Purge 6 for now. Asked if there might still be "one last story to wrap everything up", he replied:
I'm happy you asked that, because I'm allowed to say it now. I wasn't allowed to a couple of days ago. So four months ago, I would've said, "Definitely, (The Forever Purge is) the end of it." But then I woke up three and a half months ago, and I was like, "Oh, I have an idea. Oh my God." It was an "Oh, shit" moment like, "Oh, I don't know if I want another idea," but I had it. I pitched it to my producers, Sébastien and Jason. They both really liked it, Universal liked it, so I think I'm going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it. I always say if the cinema gods want us to do it, they'll tell us, "Let's proceed."
Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it'll be five years after this film, but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore. It also brings back a character from the previous films, which is fun. So if everything comes together nicely, which we know anything can happen, one last Purge movie would be something we would maybe shoot next year, potentially.
Whether or not that Purge sequel gets made depends on the box office returns for The Forever Purge, so we'll have to wait and see how well this movie does. Either way, this franchise has had a very good run. In addition to The Forever Purge and the four films before it, there were also two seasons of a Purge television series.
Directed by Everardo Gout, The Forever Purge tells the story of
Adela (Ana de la Reguera) and Juan (Tenoch Huerta), who find solace at a Texan ranch, having fled a drug cartel in Mexico. Things go awry when a group of outsiders decide to keep purging beyond the allotted time when people can break any and all laws.
Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta are joined in the cast by Josh Lucas, Zahn McClarnon, Leven Rambin, Alejandro Edda, Elijah Hardin, Will Patton, and Cassidy Freeman.
The film was produced by DeMonaco, Sébastien K. Lemercier, Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form.
