The Force Awakens breaks records with trailer viewings and ticket pre-sales

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

This may come as little surprise to anyone, but people bought a lot of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS tickets this past Monday. I mean, A LOT! IMAX reports that they sold $6.5 million in domestic sales alone, which shatters every previous record. $6.5 million! There are movies out there that don't even cost that much to make! Also, AMC reported that they sold out more than 1,000 screenings in less than a 12 hour period. Suffice it to say, audiences are ready to see this flick!

Deadline reports that a Fandango sales rep had the following to say:

This is an extraordinary time for the industry, which experienced unprecedented ticketing demand last night for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In fact, Fandango traffic surged to 7 times its typical peak levels, propelling Fandango’s advance sales for Star Wars to a record-setting first day of pre-sales. For Star Wars, we have already sold 8 times as many tickets as we did on the first day of sales for the previous record holder. Movie theaters are continually adding new show times on Fandango to meet the phenomenal demand. The enthusiasm for this year’s most anticipated movie is out of this world and we expect it to continue all the way to its debut on December 18.

These sales are due, in large part, to the brand new trailer that hit during Monday night football. 16 million tuned in to watch it during the game, after which the trailer was viewed over 112 million times online! Math tells me that's 128 million times in a single day! I can't say that I blame them, having watched the trailer…a couple dozen times myself (which might explain this). There's always talk about which film will take the number one spot over AVATAR. Maybe THE FORCE AWAKENS has a real shot.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
