The Flash director says the movie’s VFX are supposed to look like that

Most blockbusters, particularly of the comic-book variety, are packed with visual effects these days. But some of the biggest movies in recent years have come under fire for the quality of their VFX shots, and The Flash is no exception.

As reviews of The Flash began to emerge, there was one common critique in all of them — the poor quality of the VFX, particularly when Barry (Ezra Miller) is in the Speed Force. This was surprising as the movie actually had a longer post-production period than most due to pandemic-related delays. However, The Flash director Andy Muschietti told io9 that the weird VFX shots are supposed to look like that. “The idea, of course, is…we are in the perspective of the Flash,” Muschietti said. “Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this ‘waterworld’ which is basically being in Barry’s POV. It was part of the design so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended.” Do we buy that?

Despite those lackluster VFX shots, our own Chris Bumbray loved the movie. “You’ll notice the disconnect between the early screenings and some of the reviews, which are surprisingly mixed, given the early buzz,” Bumbray wrote. “Having seen it again, I stand by my original assertion that The Flash is one of the best modern superhero movies. While not in the league of the Christopher Nolan trilogy, it ranks with the best Marvel movies and is expertly made and peppered with enough fan service to delight fans – although some are wondering if perhaps too much of the movie’s focus is on easter eggs. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?“
