The Warner Bros panel at CinemaCon is running laps around news outside the show as DC’s The Flash makes headlines. The latest film starring Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster is one of the most talked about superhero films set for a 2023 release, for better or ill. Fans of the red blur have reasons to be excited about the movie beyond Miller’s return to the silver screen because the film also marks Michael Keaton’s return as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Sasha Calle’s debut as Supergirl. The hype for the film is quickly heating up, and today’s CinemaCon presentation reveals more about the anticipated adventure.
The Flash trailer is every bit as exciting as superhero fans can hope for. The preview is overflowing with new footage, including incredible looks at Michael Keaton’s Batman, Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl in action. During the over-the-top adventure, Barry managed to shatter reality, throwing the universe into chaos. Will the Flash and his super friends fix the Scarlet Speedster’s mistake, or is the DCU doomed to be rewritten forever?
Andy Muschietti was at the panel and showed a picture of him and his sister, Barbara Muschietti, wearing Superman t-shirts as kids. Muschietti praised Ezra Miller to the heavens. Miller’s involvement obviously isn’t being downplayed (how could it be). As for Keaton, Muschietti says getting Keaton wasn’t that hard. They had a lunch meeting at his favorite Italian restaurant, and he was intrigued by what might have happened to him in the thirty years following Batman Returns.
Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon will conclude with the world premiere screening of The Flash, with the first reactions from press members and attendees arriving on social media after 7:30 p.m. PT. Critic reviews will remain under embargo until we get closer to the film’s official theatrical release.
“Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past,” reads the official synopsis of The Flash. “But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe? “
In addition to Ezra Miller, the cast of The Flash includes Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Antje Traue, Kiesery Clemons, and Ben Affleck. Nothing has been revealed regarding Ezra Miller’s future in the new DC Universe, but James Gunn and Peter Safran are waiting to see how The Flash is received. “Ezra is completely committed to their recovery,” DCU Studios co-CEO Peter Safran said. “We’re fully supportive of that journey that they’re on right now. When the time is right, when they feel they are ready to have the discussion, we’ll all figure out what the best way forward is. But right now, they are completely focused on their recovery. And in our conversations with them over the last couple of months, it feels like they’re making enormous progress.”
