The Flash is racing toward an epic conclusion on The CW after announcing the series will end with Season 9. The Flash Season 9 will debut in 2023 and consist of 13 episodes.
Whispers about The Flash ending began in January when Grant Gustin signed on to a one-year deal that would have capped his participation at 15 episodes for the ninth season. The CW in May announced that Season 9 kicks off midseason rather than at the start of the CW’s schedule. The 13-episode midseason launch places The Flash finale weeks ahead of the planned theatrical premiere of Warner Bros‘ The Flash. The Flash’s other original cast members, Candice Patton and Danielle Panabaker, are returning for the final season.
“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race,” The Flash executive producer/showrunner Eric Wallace said. “So many amazing people have given their talents, time, and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world. “
Gustin spoke about his journey as Barry Allen/The Flash at the end of Season 7, saying, “Listen, I may never have a job this cool again, that this many people actually tune in to watch, so I’m not gonna take it for granted,” he told ET. “Seven [seasons] is it for most of the cast actually, but I think it would be great if we can continue after that.”
With The CW sunsetting another of its superhero series, it feels like the end of an era. I’m sure Gustin is grateful but looking forward to racing ahead in his career. Nine seasons is an epic run for any television series, and I’m confident The Flash will go out with a bang.
