Warner Bros. Discovery is burning the candle at both ends while trying to figure out what to do about The Flash. Positioned as one of the studio’s most significant (and game-changing) tentpole releases, much is riding on the film’s release. Not only does The Flash feature the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman, but it also has the potential to reset the DCEU, giving the studio an excuse to reboot the universe naturally. However, there’s an ongoing problem haunting the film’s release. That problem is Ezra Miller, who for the past several months has been the subject of one disturbing story after the next.
Earlier this week, Miller was charged with felony burglary. At the same time, other reports say the actor is being sought for questioning by the Vermont child services department for housing a mother and three children on a farm estate. These allegations have caused multiple issues for Warner Bros. Discovery, which remains paralyzed regarding how to proceed with The Flash‘s June 23, 2023 release.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source close to the studio says there are three paths they can take to release The Flash.
The first involves Miller accepting and engaging with professional help and coming back to the Vermont farm after being away. If Miller agrees, the actor can also give an interview explaining the allegations and disturbing behavior. Once Miller comes clean about everything that’s transpired, limited press engagements for The Flash could be discussed.
If Miller fails to get help, Warner could release The Flash with limited access to the film’s star. If Warners chooses this path, they will replace Miller as Flash in future projects.
Lastly, if Miller’s situation escalates even further, Warners will need to consider killing the movie off entirely. Miller plays multiple characters in the new film, making it challenging to reshoot most scenes. Plus, The Flash cost Warners $200 million. Throwing The Flash in the trash would be a significant blow to the studio’s wallet, and we all know how executives feel about losing money.
Interestingly, Miller recently participated in additional photography for The Flash. Reports indicate Miller behaved while on the set and that Warners is happy with the result. How crowds will react to Miller starring in the film remains to be seen. I feel that some trendy hashtags will hit social media close to the release of The Flash. Warners might want to sweep things under the carpet, but the internet has a long memory.
