The First Purge will be more personal than the previous films

After the first movie in THE PURGE franchise mostly wasted its intriguing premise, the subsequent sequels have made much more of an effort to explore the whole Purge phenomenon, and the next film in the series, a prequel, will go all the way back to the beginning and show how it all began. While speaking with CinemaBlend, franchise producer Andrew Form spilled a few details about THE FIRST PURGE, including that he feels that it's more of a personal story this time around. Also, it will feature a bad-ass protagonist, but that isn't exactly a big surprise, however, it will be a tall order to top Frank Grillo's Leo Barnes from the previous two movies.

This Purge is about a neighborhood. It's a lot of similar things, but it is specific to this neighborhood and to me, and I can't believe I am going to say this and don't quote me on it, but it feels more personal than the other Purge movies. It really does. I've seen the movie once and it was a long cut so I don't want to lead you down a path if we end up changing it, but it just feels like a more personal story and the protagonist in this Purge is just a badass. He's just a cool guy and it's just a cool movie. It's a really cool movie. one thing about this movie is that it's incredible, it's that DeMonaco always seems to know what's going to happen politically and culturally and I think he's done that again with this one. I don't know how he does it.

Andrew Form further teased that the story will follow a "group of people who don't agree with what the government is doing and are trying to fight against it." As we know that The Purge continues on for a number of years following the first one, I can't imagine that they'll be all that successful.

The official synopsis for THE FIRST PURGE:

Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

THE FIRST PURGE will hit theaters on July 4, 2018.
