Deadline has reported that Charlize Theron and Andy & Barbara Muschietti are developing The Final Girl, an HBO Max series adaptation of Grady Hendrix's recently released horror novel The Final Girl Support Group.
The "fast-paced, frightening, and wickedly humorous thriller" pays tribute to classic horror movies such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream. The novel follows Lynnette Tarkington, a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. "For more than a decade, she's been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable and working to put their lives back together," reads the official synopsis. "Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece. But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up." Charlize Theron will produce The Final Girl through her Denver & Delilah Films banner, with Barbara and Andy Muschietti producing through Double Dream. In addition to producing, Andy Muschietti will also direct the pilot. I haven't read the novel for myself, but it does sound like a lot of fun; well, perhaps fun isn't the right word, but you know what I mean.
