Much like many of you, I'm a big fan of Mitch Hurwitz's Arrested Development, and when it was announced that the series would be revived for a fourth season on Netflix, I was overjoyed. Although there was certainly a lot to like about the fragmented season, the end result left me feeling a little underwhelmed. Despite the mixed-reviews, Netflix was still eager to put together another season of Arrested Development, but gathering together the large ensemble cast, all of whom are quite busy with other projects, is once again proving to be a difficult task.
However, Arrested Development executive producer Brian Grazer recently told Deadline that they are really close to closing a deal for a fifth season of the series.
We are close, I think we found a way to create the compensation structure for all the actors and create a work matrix so they can still make movies and do other things and it will all integrate. So we are really close — I think within a couple of weeks at the most.
One of the main criticisms directed towards the fourth season was the story-lines which separated many of the main characters, a necessary evil given how busy many of them were with other projects, but one which I hope will be addressed in the next season. Getting Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat,Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor and Jessica Walter in one room can't be easy, but a big part of Arrested Development's charm comes from seeing all those characters interact. We still don't know exactly what a fifth season of Arrested Development will bring, but Mitch Hurwitz has previously said that it would be a "serialized murder mystery." Also, given that the fourth season had the Bluth's setting out to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, several years before Donald Trump launched his presidential bid with that same promise, it's likely that the fifth season won't be short on political commentary.
Are you happy to see the Bluth's returning? What are you hoping to see in the fifth season?
