Director Ari Aster made a big splash on the scene with last year’s horror gem HEREDITARY, one of the best-reviewed movies of the year and starring Toni Collette in a jaw-dropping performance. Now one short year later he’s back with his newest spine-tingler, MIDSOMMAR, which finds actresses Florence Pugh, Will Poulter and Jack Reynor caught up in a mid-summer festival that turns out to be a horrific pagan cult ritual. The first trailer is here and teases sinister goings-on underneath a brightly-lit canvas of blue skies, green grass and fancy dresses, which is ultimately the perfect place to have some freaky business go down.

HEREDITARY was easily one of the best movies of last year, so I’m here for anything Aster has coming out. The director has spoken about the movie in the past, likening it to “Scandinavian folk horror,” and an "apocalyptic breakup movie," which sounds like an amazing combo. The trailer certainly keeps the more terrifying elements under wraps, showcasing more of the setting and uneasy atmosphere than the more direct, unnerving scares. However, that final moment in the end with the wailing behind closed doors in genuinely unsettling, which is a strong signal of another horrific outing from Aster.
MIDSOMMAR is in theaters August 3.
