30 years ago, director Mary Lambert took the helm of a cinematic adaptation of one of Stephen King's most disturbing stories, PET SEMATARY. A new version of PET SEMATARY is currently in theatres, and this new release has had viewers returning not only to the first adaptation but also to Lambert's weird-ass sequel PET SEMATARY II, which seems to have gotten more attention in the last couple weeks than it has at any time in the 27 years since it first came out. We've been contributing to this PET SEMATARY II resurgence here at Arrow in the Head, sharing a quote from Lambert in which she said she loves the unpopular sequel, and a Kill Counter video in which we took a look at the death and mayhem in the film.
Written by Richard Outten, PET SEMATARY II stars Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards, Clancy Brown, Jared Rushton, Darlanne Fluegel, and Jason McGuire. The film has the following synopsis:
After the death of his wife, veterinarian Chase Matthews (Anthony Edwards) and his 13-year-old son Jeff (Edward Furlong) move to Ludlow, Maine to rebuild their lives. Antagonized by the neighborhood kids, Jeff befriends another outsider, Drew Gilbert, who lives in fear of his cruel stepfather Gus (Clancy Brown). After Gus cold-bloodedly shoots Drew’s beloved dog, the boys bury the body in the local Indian burial grounds – a place rumored to have powers of resurrection. When evil is awakened, the boys realize that sometimes you should just let dead dogs lie.
The PET SEMATARY II love continues in Lance Vlcek's latest entry in his The F*cking Black Sheep video series, in which he reveals why he prefers the sequel over the first film, finding it to be "far more entertaining" than its predecessor.
I can't say I have ever shared this appreciation for PET SEMATARY II, which I haven't seen in many years and have largely disregarded. I guess it's time for me to revisit it and find out if I can see it in a new, more positive light.
