The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has proven to be another winner for Marvel and Disney+ as the miniseries follows WandaVision by being a hit with critics and fans. The big question about the current and upcoming Marvel shows on the platform is if they will be one and done or will they have multiple seasons? Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, recently did an interview with "Collider" and when he was asked about a second season of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he revealed that he's completely in the dark.
"No, we have not [heard about a second season], and I'll tell you that honestly, we have not. As per usual, I don't quite know what the next step is. We never really do. Maybe some people do, maybe [Robert] Downey [Jr.] used to know, I don't know… I have nothing but complete, utter gratitude for the opportunities that I've gotten from [MCU showrunner Kevin Feige. And especially just also that Anthony [Mackie] and I have gotten, now with the show again, on my end, to yet again reinvent this character, find new nuances about him. So it's already kind of a win in so many ways for me."
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier follows the events of Avengers: Endgame and finds Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier (Stan) teaming up in a global adventure that tests their abilities…and their patience. The show dives into Bucky and Sam struggling with the exit of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) from his Captain America persona and Sam's decision on whether or not he should accept the shield that Steve passed on to him. Bucky is dealing with his own issues as he's trying to find a bit of normalcy as a civilian as his past as an assassin continues to come back to haunt him.
The series has done a good job of spotlighting two characters that couldn't be fully realized in the ensemble films and it makes a strong case that we should see more of these guys moving forward. Even though the show has been a hit with critics and fans, Stan makes it a point to say that no one at Marvel Studios takes the success for granted and that the shows are designed to end their runs without assuming another season is on the way:
"My impression is that nobody's over at that studio getting caught in the noise. They just love the work. They're just always constantly grateful. Which if you look at the movies, a lot of the endings of the movies [are] like, 'Well, this could be it, but maybe we'll get lucky and we'll get another one!' There's never been, 'Well, yeah, we're Marvel, we'll just fucking hit another home run.' There's always this thing of embracing the last film for what it is and the hope of a continuation without expectation, and that's very difficult to do at that level."
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is directed by Kari Skogland and also stars Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly, and Daniel Bruhl. Since the show is a miniseries, its run is getting closer to concluding episode five of six is set to premiere on Disney+ on Friday. The series, while very different from WandaVision, has been a blast to watch so far and is really testing the scope of what can be done on television in terms of size and scale.
