My misgivings with Kenneth Branagh‘s THOR seem to be abating with each additional glimpse at footage into Alan Taylor‘s THOR: THE DARK WORLD. Where the first film gave us a glimmering Asgard, THE DARK WORLD seems to be taking a grittier look at the fantastic home to Odin and his kin that is more in line with GAME OF THRONES.
This new extended trailer takes the footage we have seen from all other trailers to date and combines them along with some fleeting new looks at Asgard. Overall it is the same trailer but any new THOR: THE DARK WORLD footage is worth a few minutes of your day.
Alan Taylor was interviewed by SFX regarding the visual change to the sequel and what triggered such a drastic visual change.
“I love doing period stuff, and I was immersed in GAME OF THRONES. I was lucky that Marvel seemed to have an appetite for that this time. They’d consciously steered away from that kind of thing in the first one. They wanted to make sure they were distinguishing themselves from LORD OF THE RINGS, but by the time I came along it seemed like they were ready to embrace a slightly more historical attitude towards it”.
I am liking the direction of Phase Two more and more. THOR: THE DARK WORLD and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER both are taking creative risks with their storytelling that sound like they are going to pay off for the universe as a whole. I hope this is good news for all upcoming Marvel projects. My excitement level for THOR: THE DARK WORLD is officially peaking.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Renee Russo, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Stellan Skarsgard, and Tom Hiddleston hits on November 8, 2013.
