There had been rumblings that Morgan Creek Entertainment was looking to return to the world of The Exorcist, but I doubt that many fans were expecting that project to expand into a full-blown trilogy, much less that original star Ellen Burstyn would be reprising her Academy-nominated role of Chris MacNeil. Halloween director David Gordon Green will be helming this new Exorcist trilogy, and although it's still in the early stages, fans are already wondering whether or not Linda Blair will be back as Regan MacNeil.
Well, Linda Blair took to Twitter to inform fans that as of now, she hasn't had any discussions about returning to The Exorcist franchise.
Linda Blair later told the New York Post that although she hasn't had any discussions about returning for the new Exorcist trilogy, she was aware of the project as the producers had reached out before the announcement to let her know. "They were polite enough to call," Blair explained. "We spoke how amazing Ellen Burstyn is and that was as far as the conversation went. I have no idea what the project is about and I have not been engaged in a conversation of participation. It was just letting me know they were going to do the film." With three new Exorcist films on the way, it's hard to imagine Linda Blair not appearing at some point; of course, that depends on whether she would even want to. While I'm still doubtful that these new films could hope to live up to the original, I am cautiously optimistic based on what David Gordon Green has been able to do with the Halloween franchise.
Speaking of Halloween, the next film in the franchise — Halloween Kills — is set to debut at the Venice International Film Festival on September 8, 2021, before hitting theaters on October 15, 2021.
