The Evil Dead (1981) vs. Evil Dead (2013) – Horror Face-Off

Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi recently hand-picked filmmaker Lee Cronin to write and direct a new entry in the series, titled Evil Dead Rise – but this isn’t the first time Raimi has handed over the reins of an Evil Dead movie to another director. Years ago, he did the same thing when he chose Fede Alvarez to make his own Evil Dead movie. While we wait to see how Evil Dead Rise (which is currently in post-production) is going to turn out, we’ve decided to see how Alvarez’s Evil Dead (2013, watch that one HERE) matches up to Raimi’s own The Evil Dead (1981, watch it HERE) by putting them up against each other in the latest episode of our video series Horror Face-Off. Check it out in the embed above!

A revival of our long-running Face-Off article series, Horror Face-Off is all about putting

two worthy horror related foes in the ring for an epic clash! Whether it’s a pair of horror movies, actors, iconic characters, franchises, originals vs. remakes, directors, or whatever else we can think of, it’s time to lace up and throw down!

Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead has the following synopsis:

Ash (Bruce Campbell), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), and couple Scotty (Hal Delrich) and Shelly (Sarah York), drive to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. While there, they find the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (aka “The Book of the Dead”), an ancient tome whose text reawakens the dead when read out loud. After unintentionally releasing a flood of evil, the five friends must fight for their lives or become possessed.

The synopsis for Alvarez’s Evil Dead goes like this:

Mia (Jane Levy), a drug addict, is determined to kick the habit. To that end, she asks her brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend, Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and their friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) to accompany her to their family’s remote forest cabin to help her through withdrawal. Eric finds a mysterious Book of the Dead at the cabin and reads aloud from it, awakening an ancient demon. All hell breaks loose when the malevolent entity possesses Mia.

The The Evil Dead (1981) vs. Evil Dead (2013) episode was Written by Eric Walkuski, Narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, Edited by Shawn Parke, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
