All the character known as The Doof Warrior did in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was hang around on one of the many customized vehicles and play his guitar… which also happened to be a flamethrower. He wasn't important to the story, but he was still a memorable part of the film, since he was so odd and cool.
I would expect The Doof Warrior to be a one-off character – he shows up for a while in FURY ROAD, provides those awesome visuals and amusing moments, then his role in the MAD MAX universe is complete. But franchise creator George Miller put a hell of a lot more thought into Doof that I ever would have imagined. He knows this character's entire history, and he's interested in bringing Doof back for more as the series continues.
We've known since FURY ROAD was released that Miller has more MAD MAX movies in him, with the next installment to be titled MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND. During a recent interview with The Independent, Miller revealed his intentions for Doof:
We dug down deep into the subtext, the backstory of all the characters, and indeed the world…and without really thinking about it, we wrote two other screenplays just as part of the bible of the stories. Somewhere, if the planets align, there will be two other films.
If we get to make another movie, the Doof Warrior will be there! I know who his mother was. I know how it was that a man who is mute and blind survived the apocalypse. I know his story very well!
I never thought we'd see Doof again, but if Miller wants to show me more about him I'll gladly watch.
It remains to be seen just when MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND might get off the ground. Miller has always intended to make a smaller movie between MAD MAX films, but two years after the release of FURY ROAD he still hasn't gone into production on that smaller movie. Hopefully things will get rolling – and rolling quickly – very soon.
