The Devil’s Light: February 2022 release for Virginia Madsen exorcism film

It has been quite a while since we last heard an update on the exorcism thriller The Devil’s Light, which stars Virginia Madsen (the original Candyman) and was directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) from a screenplay by Robert Zappia (Halloween H20). But here’s an update worth the wait: Lionsgate has announced that they’ll be giving The Devil’s Light a theatrical release on February 11, 2022!

Lionsgate had originally planned to release the film in January of 2021, but you can probably guess why that idea was scrapped.

The film tells the story of

Sister Ann, a restless 25-year-old, who devoutly believes that performing exorcisms is her calling. But she is at odds with the institution’s traditions: sisters are not allowed to perform exorcisms, only priests. With the support of a mentor, a professor who senses her special gift, she is allowed to observe actual training sessions. Her desire to prove herself takes a personal turn when she meets one of the school’s most disturbed patients. During their harrowing encounters, Sister Ann comes face to face with a demonic force that infests the school and has mysterious ties to her own past. It is then that the power of evil and her own startling abilities are fully realized.

Sister Ann is played by Jacqueline Byers (Bad Samaritan). She and Madsen were joined in the cast by Colin Salmon (Resident Evil), Christian Navarro (13 Reasons Why), Nicholas Ralph (All Creatures Great and Small), and Ben Cross (Dark Shadows). Cross passed away in August of 2020, soon after production on The Devil’s Light wrapped.

As I have said before, I’m not generally interested in exorcism movies, but in this case I’m curious to see how a movie from the director of The Last Exorcism and the writer of Halloween H20, with Virginia Madsen in a prominent role, has turned out.
