The Devil in the White City: Keanu Reeves drops out of Hulu limited series

Keanu Reeves, The Devil in the White City, exit

Variety has reported that Keanu Reeves has dropped out of The Devil in the White City, just two months after he first signed on to star in the Hulu limited series.

The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” that was built in the shadow of the Fair.” In addition to starring in The Devil in the White City, Keanu Reeves was also set to executive produce the project. This would have marked Keanu Reeves’ first major role on U.S. TV, but it’s unclear at this time why he exited the series.

Based on Erik Larson’s novel of the same name, The Devil in the White City was originally set up as a feature film with Martin Scorsese directing and Leonardo DiCaprio set to star. However, Hulu announced in 2019 that they would be developing the project as an eight-episode limited series instead. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio remained on board as executive producers. Sam Shaw serves as writer and showrunner on the project, with Todd Field set to direct. Both will executive produce alongside Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Jennifer Davisson, Stacey Sher, Lila Byock, and Mark Lafferty. Production won’t get underway until next year, with the series set for a 2024 launch.

Keanu Reeves will next be seen in the fourth installment of the John Wick franchise, which is set to hit theaters on March 24, 2023. The actor also recently expressed an interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, singling out Ghost Rider as a role he’d like to play.
