I found James Wan's INSIDIOUS to be a great example of low-budget horror done right; the atmosphere, the scares, the actors, everything meshed together wonderfully to create a very memorable and scary (for me at least) experience. INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2…not so much; it had its moments but I didn't find it to be nearly as effective as its predecessor.
The third sequel, which is in fact a prequel, will be the first without James Wan at the helm; instead, his friend and writing partner Leigh Whannell has taken over those duties. A new clip for INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 debuted at WonderCon 2015 which shows Quinn (Stefanie Scott) asking Elise (Lin Shaye) for her help in contacting her deceased mother.
How great is Lin Shaye by the way? For the past two films she's managed to completely sell whatever it is they throw at her, so despite whatever reservations I may have about this third installment, I'm delighted they brought her back for INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3. Also returning will be Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson as Specs and Tucker, who will round out the main cast with franchise newcomers Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott.
The synopsis of INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3:
This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
In addition to the above clip, a new poster for the film was also released, check it out. I haven't quite been won over by what I've seen of the film so far but I'm holding out hope that it will surprise me just like the first one did.
Which horror three-quel is your favourite? Are there any that are actually better than the first?
