After sweeping the recent Academy Awards, Everything Everywhere All at Once directors The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) are heading to a galaxy far, far away. First reported by One Take News, it seems that The Daniels have directed at least one episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the upcoming live-action series starring Jude Law.
Production on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has already wrapped, but it’s standard for Disney/Lucasfilm to keep every aspect of these productions to themselves, including who directs each episode. Lucasfilm hasn’t commented on the story, so it’s unknown if The Daniels have directed one or multiple episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The series comes from Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts and follows “four kids who find themselves lost in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home.” It takes place in the New Republic era, so it’s possible it could cross over into the events of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
The Daniels took home Best Director at the Academy Awards for their work on Everything Everywhere All at Once, as well as awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis).
While some had The Daniels pegged to direct a Star Wars movie, an episode of a TV series is an excellent way to dip your toe into the franchise without spending years developing a big-screen project. We should learn more about the future of the Star Wars franchise at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, which takes place in London from April 7-10th. “Star Wars Celebration returns, launching with a must-see showcase that will kick the weekend’s festivities into hyperdrive,” reads the event description. “Lucasfilm’s current crop of live-action filmmakers will be joined by special guests to discuss the many current and upcoming Star Wars adventures, including The Mandalorian, Andor, and more!“
As exciting as it is to have The Daniels step into the Star Wars franchise, I doubt they’ll be bringing farting corpses multiverses to Skeleton Crew. Would you like to see The Daniels direct a big-screen Star Wars movie?
