It's been fifteen years since creator Jason Katims' ROSWELL television series ended its three-season stint on the WB and UPN. Now, the CW is looking to reboot the mystery drama for an hour long re-imagining of the 1999 series that starred a young Katherine Heigl alongside Shiri Appleby, Jason Behr, Majandra Delfino, and Michael Guerin.
Just like the original series presentation, the new iteration of the property will be based upon the Roswell High novels penned by Melinda Metz. Serving as the executive producer and writer on the project will be Carina Adly MacKenzie (THE ORIGINALS), who will craft a reality-bending tale that takes place in a state located along the Mexican border.
After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, NM, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
It's being reported that other than Kevin Kelly Brown, who was an executive producer on the original series, an entirely new team will be placed in charge of producing the new ROSWELL for Amblin TV.
Are there any ROSWELL fans out there? If so, why not sound off in the comments section and let us know what you think of this news. Personally, I've never managed to catch a single episode of the series, though I do like the sound of the synopsis posted above. With X-FILES making a comeback in recent times, I see no reason why ROSWELL can't join the fold of rebooting successful sci-fi mystery properties for a new generation.
