The Curse: Emma Stone to lead Showtime series from The Safdie Brothers

With just a few films to their credit, The Safdie Brothers have already made quite a name for themselves. After their acclaimed Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, the siblings helmed Uncut Gems which ranked on multiple best-of lists in 2019. Now, the duo is turning their talents to the small screen for a series on Showtime and they have landed one hell of a lead.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone has joined the cast of The Curse, a collaboration between Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, who will also star. According to reports, The Curse explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show.

Josh Safdie will executive produce through the brother's Elara Pictures studio, alongside Fielder and Stone, who executive produces through her Fruit Tree banner. The Curse marks Stone's first starring TV role since playing Annie Landsberg in Netflix's Maniac, a supremely strange series from creators Cary Joji Fukunaga and Patrick Somerville. The new project will also serve as the Safdies first TV series.

“The fierce intelligence and wit of the incomparable Emma Stone make her the perfect partner with the ingenious minds of the Safdie brothers and the subversive comedy of Nathan Fielder,” said Amy Israel, Executive Vice President, Scripted Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “Together, they promise to deliver a groundbreaking satire that is both unexpected and deeply human. Showtime continues to shine as a beacon for visionary filmmakers who are looking to create their ambitious, singular shows.”

In other Emma Stone-related news, rumor has it that she's signed on to reprise her role as Gwen Stacy for Spider-Man 3. By that same token, I've also heard whispers that her part in Spider-Man 3 could serve as a launching pad for a Spider-Gwen spinoff. Again, these are just rumors at this time, but we'll be sure to keep you in the loop.
