The Crow reboot: Director Corin Hardy is hoping it will still happen

Last Updated on August 10, 2021

Director Corin Hardy and star Jason Momoa were attached to a reboot of The Crow (watch the original film HERE) for years before the project fell apart over "financial and creative differences" three years ago. A year and a half after Hardy and Momoa left the project, we heard it was back in active development… but there haven't been any updates since. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Hardy revealed that he's still hoping to make The Crow himself someday.

It's a story that I'm just in love with and wedded towards and I put three and a half, four years of life into and love and blood and sweat and tears, and I have a ton of materials, so I don't know whether one day … I suppose I'm not really wanting to show them because I still believe there will be a Crow sometime, but we'll see. I do think both James O'Barr's original Crow graphic novel and the subsequent other iterations of that character in the comic books, there's no reason not to do a lot more with that character, the concept of The Crow, the mythology of The Crow, and the tone and what that represents is still unique within the world we're in at the moment."

Based on the comic book series created by James O'Barr, the first version of The Crow was directed by Alex Proyas and released in 1994. It had the following synopsis:

The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered by members of a violent inner-city gang. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) to complete his macabre mission.

Following the production of three sequels (each about a different resurrected character), a remake was first announced in late 2008 and has been languishing in development hell ever since. Several screenwriters have come and gone, scripts have been written and scrapped, studios have gone bankrupt, and directors like Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and Francisco Javier Gutiérrez have all been involved along the way. Actors up for the lead role have included Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, and Jack Huston.

I'm sure another version of The Crow will happen at some point, and since Hardy is so passionate about the material I hope he will be at the helm when it happens.
