The Couple Next Door: Eleanor Tomlinson, Sam Heughan star in psychological thriller series

Starz and Channel 4 have given a greenlight to the psychological thriller series The Couple Next Door, Deadline reports, making this the first collaboration between the US and UK networks. Filming is now underway, with a cast that includes Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Sam Heughan (Outlander), Alfred Enoch (the Harry Potter franchise), and Jessica De Gouw (Arrow).

Marcella writer David Allison has written the scripts for The Couple Next Door, with Dries Vos (Professor T) directing the six-part series. Based on the Dutch show New Neighbours, this series will tell the story of Evie and Pete (Tomlinson and Enoch), who move into an upscale neighborhood and find themselves in a world of curtain twitching and status anxiety. They find friendship in the shape of the couple next door, alpha traffic cop Danny (Heughan) and his wife, glamorous yoga instructor Becka (De Gouw), but after Danny and Evie share a passionate night together, there is trouble ahead.

Eagle Eye Drama is producing the series, with Jo McGrath, Walter Iuzzolino, and Alison Kee executive producing. Channel 4’s Caroline Hollick and Rebecca Holdsworth commissioned the series. EVP Programming Karen Bailey is overseeing The Couple Next Door for Starz, and it will be distributed by Beta Film.

Starz and Channel 4 said that The Couple Next Door will explore “the stultifying claustrophobia of suburbia and the fallout of chasing your darkest desires.” So things are definitely not going to go very well for these characters. And I happen to like a good thriller about people making decisions that cause things to go terrible wrong for them, so I look forward to seeing how this show is going to turn out. Although my enjoyment of the different seasons has fluctuated, I’m also a fan of Marcella, so the involvement of Marcella writer David Allison helps boost my interest in this project.
