The Choose Your Own Adventure movie nabs screenwriters and a director

Last summer, we learned that 20th Century Fox was looking to make a big screen version of the classic book series CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE. It was unknown exactly how the interactive books would be converted to a movie but the goal was to make a franchise that would tie in with books, merchandising, films, and more. While the plot and direction are still unknown, Fox has found the folks who will write and direct the film.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM and RENO 911! writer/actors Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are coming aboard to script CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE while WE’RE THE MILLERS and DODGEBALL director Rawson Marshall Thurber is in line to helm the film. While none of these guys instills me with any excitement for the movie, there are many worse choices out there. NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM may be a pretty generic movie, it does have a level of magic that could work well for a family adventure flick.

I am beginning to get the feeling that CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE is going to end up being about a kid and his parent who somehow stumble across an object (a magical book, perhaps?) that imbues them with the power to change their fate. I envision them somehow stumbling across the end of a story and being able to go back and try something different. While I used to be excited about this movie, if my theory turns out to be true then I have lost interest already.

Here is to hoping that this trio can find a more original way to convert the books onto the big screen. If THE LEGO MOVIE can work, so can this.
