The Child’s Play TV series will return to the tone of the early films

Although the CHILD'S PLAY franchise is set to receive a reboot later this year, the original mythology will be continuing in a new CHILD'S PLAY TV series at Syfy from creator Don Mancini, franchise producer David Kirschner, and Channel Zero's Nick Antosca. The series was officially announced several weeks ago, and, in a statement, Mancini said that it will be a "fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now."

While speaking with /Film, Nick Antosca dropped a few tidbits on the upcoming TV series, which he says is currently going under the working title of Chucky. I like it. Those who have followed the CHILD'S PLAY franchise over the decades have been the series shift from horror to comedy and back again, but Antosca said that the series will be leaning towards the tone of the early films.

The series is going to be closer to the tone of the first two movies in the series though. It’s going to go back to a sort of classic scare.

Over the course of seven movies, the CHILD'S PLAY mythology has grown quite a lot, and while Nick Antosca says that the TV series won't be contradicting any of the films, it will also tell a whole new story. "You could come into it without knowing anything about the previous stuff and get into it. But it is consistent with all the mythology that has come before, so it is in canon," Antosca said. In addition to telling a new story, the series will also be focusing on new characters, but Antosca won't rule out appearances from franchise regulars such as Jennifer Tilly or Fiona Dourif. Thankfully, the plan still includes Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. There's no official release date for the TV series just yet, but the CHILD'S PLAY remake is slated to hit theaters on June 21, 2019.
