Focus Features has released the first trailer for The Card Counter and it looks like writer and director Paul Schrader is bringing his trademark intensity to this tale of revenge and redemption.
In the film, an ex-military interrogator turned gambler (Oscar Isaac) is haunted by the ghosts of his past decisions. Things come to a head when he attempts to give guidance to a young man who is out for revenge against a mutual enemy. The film also stars Tye Sheridan, Tiffany Haddish, and Willem Dafoe and it is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival in September.
Filming of The Card Counter took place in Biloxi, Mississippi on February 24, 2020. Like most films shooting last year, production on the movie was paused on March 16, 2020, after an actor with a small role had flown in from Los Angeles and tested positive for COVID-19. Production on the project resumed on July 6, 2020, and wrapped on July 12, 2020.
Focus Features acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the film in July 2020 and also features Martin Scorsese, William Olsson, Lee Broda, Ruben Islas, and Stanley Preschutti on board as producers. Schrader and Scorsese are longtime collaborators, with Schrader writing or co-writing four of Scorsese's films including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Bringing Out the Dead.
