Director Richard Kelly is something of an enigma. His off-beat post-proto-meta flick DONNIE DARKO wasn’t the most accessible of films and tanked at the box office, but has since reached cult status of the highest order. SOUTHLAND TALES although ambitious, never really found an audience and with an uber-limited theatrical release last year and mostly negative reviews, it’s more than likely that it will simply drift into movie oblivion. It’s no surprise then, that most people don’t know what to make of Kelly’s next film THE BOX. The horror film stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as an unhappy couple that receives a box that will make them millionaires with the push of a button but simultaneously kill someone they don’t know. The concept is twisted for sure, and with Kelly’s penchant for thought-provoking cinema, we may have a real explicit moral tale on our hands.
With Diaz in the lead, I’m sure the studio is hoping for big box office returns, so it will be interesting to see if Kelly can maintain his vanguard attitude towards directing while appealing to the masses. Check out the poster for THE BOX below and let us know what you think!
