The Bourne Supremacy

Jason Bourne has given up on his life of being a spy and is living a quiet existence with his cute girlfriend in India. He’s having some reoccurring bad dreams, but then again…who doesn’t? Then one day, he notices a Russian dude walking around his neighborhood and it appears as though he has no choice but to get back into the spy game, now that his newfound peace has been disturbed. But trust me when I say that you don’t want Jason Bourne pissed and after you, man. Wow. What follows is a man on the loose in Europe with only his passports, his mighty brain and his lightning-quick action moves in tow. And you know what? That’s more than enough!

Talk about adrenaline packed into an hour and forty minutes!! Wow. I was dead tired when I started watching this movie, but by the last scene, I was hooked on smack and looking for another Bourne fix. Kudos to everyone involved in this superior sequel which matches the original film in most every single way and adds to it, more country-hopping, more action, faster chases, more chicks in bikinis (this is a lie), a greater mystery carved into a variety of layers and one majorly kick-ass score that should be nominated for any “Best Score” award at the end of this year. I can still hear that music pumping in my head and it’s forcing me to write faster. Powerful indeed. Of course, one of the things that made folks like the first movie (which incidentally, was the film “most rented” in 2004) was the casting of Matt Damon as the lead, James Bond….oops, I mean, Jason Bourne (same initials…natch!). What I liked about him in both films was his ability to be the “plain looking guy”, and yet, still able to convey the utter reality of what really lies within—which is an ass-kicking, calculating, brilliant spy-man!

Forget the juvenile sexual one-liners that have turned the James Bond series into a pun-filled parody of itself and check yourself into a serious-minded thriller that doesn’t stop to talk shop and doesn’t talk down to its audience. A million things happen in this movie and if you’re talking on your piece-of-shit cell phone as it does and you miss it…it’s your loss, baby. For anyone paying attention to every detail (especially during a 2nd or 3rd watch), you will receive a nicely convoluted film that comes together by the end, offering tons of editing, lots of action, a touch of drama and yeah…even a tiny bit of heart (although it would have been nice to leave the kid some dough in the end, you cheapskate). Does the film go over-the-top at times? Absolutely! Nobody is going to accuse this movie of sticking to reality at all times, but if you get into it all (which most people should) and if you understand that it is just a movie and a movie that wants to thrill you at all costs…leave your brain on, douse a bag of popcorn into your lap and enjoy the addictive score and non-stop action, as the movie kicks you up the nuts in scene one, and kindly hands them back to you in the end. A damn good time!
