Aaron McGruder's THE BOONDOCKS is coming back and in a big way when a reboot of the original animated series rolls up on HBO Max. Word on the street has it that HBO Max has given the upcoming Boondocks reboot a two-season, 24-episode order, courtesy of McGruder and Sony Pictures Animation. The new series will pump up the volume in Autumn 2020 with the arrival of a 50-minute special. Additionally, as a way of adding more bullets to the chamber of this exciting revival, HBO Max will also be hosting all 55 episodes of the original THE BOONDOCKS series on their streaming platform.

The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly’, ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious’,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TBS, TNT and truTV. “Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.”

Based on the comic strip created by McGruder, THE BOONDOCKS reboot will update the series to take place in a contemporary setting, with the Freeman family matching attitudes and expletives with a nefarious local government tyrant by the name of Uncle Rukus, who lords over the fictional burg of Woodcrest County, Maryland with malice and an iron grip.

“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” said McGruder, “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

McGruder will return to the concept as showrunner and will serve as executive producer along with Norm Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment in addition to Seung Kim and Meghann Collins Robertson.

It's been several years since the final episode of THE BOONDOCKS aired in June of 2014, and times have indeed changed since then. As a fan of both animation and biting social commentary, I'll be very interested to see how THE BOONDOCKS interprets some of the greatest threats facing our society today. It's my guess that Robert "Grandad" Freeman, Huey and Riley will have plenty to say about how people are being treated like animals by those who're are meant to serve and protect. It's still a dog eat dog world out there since THE BOONDOCKS last patrolled the hood, and I think it's high time for the characters to make a comeback.
