The Bleeding Joystick is a bi-weekly column that rounds up the more stand-out GENRE VIDEO GAME news that is out there!
The Dark Knight Rises Gets a Game!
I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed the Batman Begins game that came out when the original flick did. It wasn’t perfect, but it captured some cool Batman moments. Of course, since then, we’ve been treated to the Arkham games (which are some of the coolest things featuring Batman- period), but we didn’t get a Dark Knight game (huge bummer) and there’s nothing on the horizon for consoles as it relates to The Dark Knight Rises.
However, I’m proud to announce that those of us with iOS devices can rejoice, as Gameloft has released their own beat’em up style Batman game based on the new flick. I haven’t played the hell out of it or anything, but the graphics are gorgeous and it seems enjoyable so far.
So, if dropping a couple bucks to suit up as the Caped Crusader sounds fun, jump on it from the iTunes store here.
Sony Lands Expendables 2 First!
A while back we showed you a trailer for the upcoming Expendables game based on the sequel to be released soon in theaters. Sony recently announced that they’re going to be the first to give gamers a crack at the title, as it will debut in this year’s PSN Play lineup alongside Sound Shapes, Papo & Yo, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. If you pick up all those game together, I guess it gives you credit towards other games in the PS store.
So, Sony fanboys, rejoice! This brutal co-op shoot’em’up is coming to you first and it’ll only set you back 15 bones (or 12 bones if you’re a PS Plus member).
Speaking of Sony fanboys, some hefty news was recently announced as it relates to the upcoming God of War game, Ascension for PS3. It would appear as though there has been a fair amount of complaining about violence against women. Design manager Dave Hewitt noted that the developers have “pulled back” from the female violence and that “certain things carry a different kind of resonance we don’t want to get into.”
Surprisingly enough, Hewitt goes on to say that this isn’t a game that should celebrate violence and although he will rip enemies in half, “there’s no kind of enjoying the moment”, and the game isn’t designed to be gratuitous.
How do you feel about the scaled-back female beatings? I don’t remember them being overly prominent in the last titles, but maybe that’s just me. It is an awesome series of games though, and it is true that plenty of young and impressionable boys play. Let the debate begin.
Man Dies Playing Diablo III
In some truly awful news, someone has actually played Diablo III to death. A gentleman in Taiwan passed away after playing the game for 40 straight hours. He was only 18 and had holed himself up in an internet cafe, and didn’t even stop to eat. It was only a few days later on a Sunday when an employee found him passed out on a table. He was brought to the hospital and died shortly after.
I know that this isn’t exactly exciting news, but this serves as a reminder that we need to balance our lives. Moderation is key, people. Blizzard, the game’s creator, had this to say: “We’re saddened to hear this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We don’t feel it would be appropriate for us to comment further without knowing all of the circumstances involved. While we recognize that it’s ultimately up to each individual or their parent or guardian to determine playing habits, we feel that moderation is clearly important, and that a person’s day-to-day life should take precedence over any form of entertainment.”
Dead Space 3 Gets Juicy
I know I mentioned Dead Space 3 in a previous column, but I wanted to take the time to give y’all a little update. We know that this new game loads on the action and relies heavily on co-op (with a new character named Carver), which is a super exciting development. Executive producer Steve Papoutsis said that Isaac is most certainly not happy to be back in action in Dead Space 3: “The events that kind of thrust him into action in Dead Space 3will reveal themselves when people play the game, but by no means is he a willing participant in the story that’s gonna unfold.”
Always the tease, Papoutsis went on to say that “With Dead Space 3, it’s definitely Isaac’s story and we’re trying to bring answers to this story. There’s a lot of questions that have come in Dead Space 1 and 2, and with Dead Space 3 we really wanna answer a lot of questions.” I for one absolutely love these games, and am happy to report on them as new details come out. Enough jabbering, check out the trailer from E3:
