Genre fans may already know Carlson Young from her roles on the TV shows True Blood, Grimm, and Scream: The TV Series, but now she has another reason be recognized by the horror-loving audience: she has made her feature writing and directing debut with the psychedelic horror / fantasy thriller film The Blazing World, which will be receiving a VOD and limited theatrical release tomorrow, October 15th. In anticipation of the film’s release, a clip and the trailer have been released online, and you can see them both in the embed above.
A feature expansion of a short film Young made in 2018, The Blazing World was written by Young and Pierce Brown, and it has the following synopsis:
Decades after the accidental drowning of her twin sister, a self-destructive young woman returns to her family home, finding herself drawn to an alternate dimension where her sister may still be alive. Through an epic journey down the darkest corridors of her imagination, she tries to exorcise the demons pushing her closer and closer to the edge.
Carlson Young stars in the film and is joined in the cast by Udo Kier, Dermot Mulroney, Vinessa Shaw, Soko, and John Karna. It’s Mulroney who really gets to shine in the clip, as it’s all about him delivering a minute-long monologue.
I have to admit that I have never seen anything Young has acted in, I still haven’t gotten around to watching that Scream show, so I’m being introduced to her as a director who’s a big fan of Dario Argento and has an eye for cool visuals. The trailer is nice to look at and Young assembled a great supporting cast around herself, so I look forward to watching The Blazing World as soon as possible.
