BLADE RUNNER 2 has been a geeky pipe dream for so long that people just kind of forgot about it. However, along with news that Sony PIctures has acquired international distribution rights for the sequel, we've learned that the long-awaited production will begin this July!
The film, executive produced by original director Ridley Scott, will be helmed by SICARIO's Dennis Villenueve and star Harrison Ford (returning in the role of Richard Deckard) alongside Ryan Gosling.
This will be the third time Harrison Ford resurrects one of his iconic properties, first with the massively derided INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, then with the box office vaporizing STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. That's about as far apart on the spectrum as two films could possibly be, but his enthusiasm for returning to the role of Han Solo is certainly a hopeful sign for the actor's portrayal of Deckard.
Will Villenueve breathe life into a long-dormant property? Will we discover the true nature of Deckard's humanity? Will BLADE RUNNER 2 possibly live up to our expectations? Only time will tell, but now it's much less time than any of us anticipated.
