In the latest episode of THE BLACK SHEEP, we look back at A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE (OWN IT HERE – WATCH IT HERE), which was released back in '85 and became a sizable hit, even outgrossing the original. Once the reviews started coming in, Freddy's Revenge proved to be divisive among fans and critics. The mounting fan backlash was the eventual reason for making DREAM WARRIORS a return to form while completely ignoring part two.
This entry was in heavy rotation for me as a kid, with Freddy's makeup being some of the series best work, but even back then, I could tell this one was"different" from all of the others. Krueger doesn't even kill anyone in the dream world but opts to go the possession route. This character switch, mixed with the homoerotic subtext added by writer David Chaskin, makes NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE one strange sequel for a major horror series. It may not be the best in the series, but there is more than enough to love for a movie that never tried to play it safe.
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE tells the following story:
A teenage boy is haunted in his dreams by deceased child murderer Freddy Krueger, who is out to possess him in order to continue his reign of terror in the real world.
