In the latest BLACK SHEEP episode, we look back at FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING (OWN IT HERE – WATCH IT HERE). This has always come with the backlash of being the non-Jason Voorhees entry and the BLACK SHEEP of the series. Pair that with one of the worst VHS box covers, and you have a recipe for disaster. I'll be the first to admit that this may have been the last film in the Jason saga that I rented as a kid. I can't stress how dumb the cover art is, and with the title "A New Beginning," I had no interest in seeing a post-Jason FRIDAY THE 13TH film.
Of course, I eventually watched it and have grown quite fond of this odd, misplaced entry over the years. As HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH has overcome its initial fallout, I still hope that A NEW BEGINNING will eventually find its audience as well. Setting aside the ending twist where an angry paramedic ends up as a Jason copycat, this has everything fans love about a FRIDAY THE 13TH film; Dumb teens, nudity, a hockey-masked murderer and cool kills. Though the fan-favorite JASON LIVES rectified the mistake of leaving out Mr. Voorheess in part five, I still believe FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING holds up much better than it gets credit for and is prime for rediscovery.
