Following months of speculation regarding the departure of current DOCTOR WHO star Matt Smith, The BBC is prepared to make an exciting “time-and-space shattering announcement” regarding the future of the long-running television series. That revelation will be the identity of the 12th Doctor who will replace Matt Smith on the next season of the hit British series.
The announcement will be aired live on a special called DOCTOR WHO LIVE: THE NEXT DOCTOR which will air this Sunday, August 4th at 2pm EST. This worldwide live broadcast will also be used for the 50th anniversary episode which will be simulcast live across the planet on November 23rd. In case you didn’t know, DOCTOR WHO is kind of a big deal.
Producer and showrunner Steven Moffat offered this regarding the news:
“The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.”
DOCTOR WHO is current celebrating it’s 50th anniversary which will feature a television movie about the first doctor titled AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME starring David Bradley this Fall along with the anticipated special reuniting Matt Smith with prior incarnations of The Doctor, specifically David Tennant. John Hurt, who made a surprise cameo in the recent season finale, will also appear in the anniversary episode.
Several names have been bandied about for the 12th version of The Doctor with British oddsmakers currently making the top candidate Peter Capaldi who would be an awesome choice. Check out this classic compilation of Capaldi from the BBC series THE THICK OF IT and the film IN THE LOOP.
