Although Marco Polo doesn't seem to garner as much praise of some of Netflix's other series, I found myself quite enjoying the first season largely thanks to some beautiful visuals and standout characters. The series follows a young Marco Polo who finds himself in the court of the great Kublai Khan and must navigate a world of greed, betrayal and sexual intrigue as the Mongol leader wages a bloody campaign to become Emperor of the World. Although the focus is on Marco Polo (Lorenzo Richelmy), it's Benedict Wong's work as Kublai Khan which kept me coming back for more. Netflix has released a new trailer for the second season of Marco Polo which seems to point to a civil war brewing which could destroy the Mongol empire.
"Take back the throne…by any means necessary."
Marco Polo's ten-episode second season debuts on July 1, 2016 on Netflix.
