Box Office: The Batman soars to third weekend at number one

The Batman easily maintained the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row and the film also crossed a major milestone at the domestic box office.

The Batman grossed $36.8 million over the weekend which represented a 45% decline from the previous frame. This was s a bit more than the 40% decline that I predicted but it’s still a very solid showing. Per Deadline, The Batman‘s third weekend is the third-best, after The Dark Knight ($42.6 million) and Wonder Woman ($41.2 million). The film just needs another $31 million and it will have surpassed 2015’s Batman v. Superman‘s domestic B.O. ($330.3 million). To date, The Batman has grossed $300.1 million at the domestic box office and after taking in an additional $49.1 million from international markets, it brings its global haul to $598.1 million.

In second place we find not Uncharted but Funimation Films Jujutsu Kaisen O with an impressive gross of $17.6 million. I’ll admit that I didn’t see this coming and I have constantly underestimated how well these Funimation Films do, at least on opening weekend. The opening is 17% under the $21.2 million opening of Funimation’s Demon Slayer last Apri and box office analytics firm EntTelligence reports that 1.3 million bought tickets to Jujutsu Kaisen 0 vs. Demon Slayer‘s first weekend which drew 1.6 million. Even with the decline, this is still an impressive showing.

In third, we find Sony’s Uncharted which grossed $8 million over the weekend. That’s a slim decline of just 14% as the film continues to have great legs at the box office. To date, Uncharted has grossed $125.8 million at the domestic box office and after grossing an additional $19 million from overseas markets, the film brings its global total to an impressive $337.3 million.

Debuting in fourth is the critically praised horror effort X, which grossed $4.4 million. The film’s better than expected opening was fueled by venues in the Southwest, where nine of the top ten theaters came from. What’s interesting is that we have another horror release that has divided critics and audiences. X has a 95% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes but a 68% on Comscore’s PostTrak audience exits, along with a low 45% recommend. Needless to say, the film will be a big cult hit with horror fans but may have trouble expanding beyond that.

Rounding out the top five is Channing Tatum’s Dog which grossed $4 million over the weekend. That represents a slim decline of 21% as the film continues to perform well due to solid word of mouth. To date, Channing Tatum and man’s best friend Dog has grossed $54.2 million at the domestic box office.
