We’ve got a little over a month to go until the release of The Batman and it’s probably safe to say that it won’t be the only time we see Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson tackle the Dark Knight. In fact, Pattinson has already said that he would “do this for as many times as people want to see it” and that he and director Matt Reeves have already discussed making a trilogy. The first film will see Batman going up against the Riddler and the sky’s the limit in terms of which villain will menace Gotham in the sequel, it could even by Mr. Freeze.
While speaking with Collider, The Batman director Matt Reeves said that although he wants to keep The Batman sequel grounded, there’s still room for more fantastical characters such as Mr. Freeze.
In my view, I just feel drawn to finding the grounded version of everything. So to me it would be a challenge in an interesting way to try and figure out how that could happen, even the idea of something like Mr. Freeze, that such a great story, right? I think there’s actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great.
Reeves continued, “So, I love the fantastical side of Batman, but this iteration, obviously, while being, to me, I think it is very comics faithful, but I don’t think that this one is necessarily, it doesn’t lean as hard into the fantastical, I guess. But I think to me what would be interesting would be to try and unwind the fantastical and see, well, how could that make sense here? And so that’s kind of my view, how I see it.” The last time we saw Mr. Freeze on the big-screen was in Batman & Robin back in 1997 as played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’d say that more than enough time has passed and the world is ready for a new iteration of Mr. Freeze. What do you think? If not Mr. Freeze, which Batman villain would you like to see pop up in the sequels?
The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
