The Batman: Jim Carrey has mixed feelings about Paul Dano’s Riddler

Before the release of The Batman, the last time we saw the Riddler on the big screen was in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. Jim Carrey played that incarnation of the iconic Batman villain and it’s safe to say that Paul Dano’s Zodiac-inspired version of the Riddler is quite different.

Despite not having seen The Batman yet, Jim Carrey admitted to Unilad that he has mixed emotions about the new film’s vastly darker interpretation of the Riddler.

I’ve not seen it. It’s a very dark version. I have mixed emotions about it. To each his own and all that. I love him as an actor, he’s a tremendous actor.

Carrey added, “There’s a spot of worry in me over gaffer-taping people’s faces and encouraging people to do the same. Some sickos out there that might adopt that method.” Prior to the release of Kick-Ass 2, in which he played Colonel Stars and Stripes, Jim Carrey spoke out against the film after the Sandy Hook shootings, saying that he couldn’t in good conscience support that level of violence. Since then, his roles have largely been non-violent or have involved cartoonish violence, such as in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. “I do have a conscience about the things I choose,” Carrey said. “Robotnik has cartoon bombs and no-one gets hurt. I know there’s a place for it, and I don’t want to criticise it, but it’s not my kind of thing… it’s very well done, those movies are very well done.

Following the release of the Joel Schumacher Batman movies, the franchise has undoubtedly pivoted towards the more dark and gritty types of stories and characters, with Matt Reeves’ The Batman becoming the darkest yet. Is there room for both? Of course, but it doesn’t have to be to everyone’s taste. The Batman is still playing in theaters, and Jim Carrey will next be seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on April 8, 2022.
