THE BATMAN trailer made its debut at DC FanDome over the weekend and it was met with intense enthusiasm from fans who were able to get a more definitive look at what director Matt Reeves will be bringing to the table for this latest incarnation of The Dark Knight. Some fans were concerned about the casting of Robert Pattinson but that seemed to be put to rest after the trailer release on Saturday. We caught glimpses of over key performers in the film including Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon but upon my first viewing, I kept wondering where was Colin Farrell, the popular actor tasked to play The Penguin in the film. Did I blink and miss him? Turns out I didn't blink and miss him but he just appeared virtually unrecognizable in makeup to give him a distinctive look. Thanks to fan reaction on Twitter, it turns out he didn't look unrecognizable at all but the person he did look like has made some fans jokingly wonder why that particular actor wasn't chosen to the play the role.
Soon after the trailer dropped, fans began going to Twitter saying that Colin Farrell's Penguin looks exactly like the actor, Richard Kind. In case you're unaware of who he is, Kind has been steadily working in TV and film for years with roles on Spin City, Mad About You, The Goldbergs, Glee, Curb Your Enthusiasm, ARGO, BOMBSHELL and even the Batman adjacent series, Gotham. I'm not going to lie, once the resemblance was pointed out to me it was hard to unsee and now fans are wondering why didn't they just cut out the middle man of applying makeup to Farrell and just cast Kind instead. You can check out some of the Twitter reactions below:
I donâ??t get why they went through all the trouble of putting hella facial prosthetics on Colin Farrell so he could play Penguin when they couldâ??ve just cut out the middleman and gotten Richard Kind to play him instead pic.twitter.com/5Y7WAmoEKB

Okay but now I feel like we could have had Richard Kind as Penguin and now Iâ??m upset

Imagine hiring Colin Farrell to play Penguin and putting him through hours of makeup just to have him look exactly like Richard Kind when you could've just hired @RealRichardKind pic.twitter.com/0VjDl2i3qD

Thinking about how they made Colin Farrell look a lot like Richard Kind for his role in #TheBatman
Also thinking about how Richard Kind would be a really good Penguin in the Batman universe.

Anyone else feel that Penguin looks EXACTLY LIKE RICHARD KIND pic.twitter.com/PggjBvO2w7

But…Richard Kind as The Penguin would actually be amazing and much better casting

Why didn't they just hire Richard Kind. He's the perfect Penguin. They've paid way more money to hire a big star, then made him look like Richard Kind

Now Iâ??m upset we have no Batman movie with Richard Kind as The Penguin. https://t.co/7dwdfktxBN

Of course, this is all fun and games but the resemblance is a bit uncanny. If anything I hope this allows Richard Kind to trend on Twitter because I'd say he deserves it. As for Farrell, even though he does look like Kind in the trailer, it's actually a testament of how good the makeup is because I don't see a hint of Colin Farrell in that visual at all. Just makes you look forward to what other surprises THE BATMAN has in store for us.
Do YOU see the Richard Kind resemblance? Should he have gotten a shot to play The Penguin? THE BATMAN hits screens on October 1, 2021.
