Searchlight has released the first trailer for The Banshees of Inisherin, the first feature written and directed by Oscar winner Martin McDonagh, that reunites In Bruges’ actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in a dark friendship break-up story.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN follows lifelong friends Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Padraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.”
During a chat with Vanity Fair, McDonagh described The Banshees of Inisherin by saying, “This is about things getting inexorably worse from a simple, sad starting point. The love was there, like in any broken-down relationship, but it was interesting to have them not have that ease with each other — because they love each other as actors, as people, but they cannot have that onscreen. I wanted to make something that someone who likes ‘In Bruges’ would go with, but that could be a little more, at least at the outset, odder or weirder — and definitely something different.”
