Ah, echoes of 2008 are ringing in my ears, as I bask in the glory of a kick ass movie not only kicking ass, but also taking names and chewing bubble gum at the box office. THE DARK KNIGHT was such an epic, deserving success and it felt like, for the first time, one of “our” movies was taking the taco.
Well, now let’s make that two. THE AVENGERS has become the fastest movie to gross $400 million domestically (the 13th film ever to cross that benchmark.)
It’s now the highest-grossing Disney film of all time, surpassing TOY STORY 3 and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST in worldwide gross. This currently puts THE AVENGERS in the 13th spot for domestic box office and 6th for worldwide. And the best part? There’s really no signs of it hitting a speedbump until June 8, when PROMETHEUS finally lands.
It’s unlikely that BATTLESHIP or SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN will stop THE AVENGERS in its tracks, which leaves the possibility of three more weeks of domination.
The summer box office is always a fun watch, especially when films outperform or underperform. It’s the most public display of gambling and a total riot.
Personally, I’m pulling for THE AVENGERS to take the top spot. If anything could unseat AVATAR it’s THE AVENGERS and I’d love to see a comic nerd victory. All the shit that people talk about comic book dorks and the number one movie of all time being THE AVENGERS? Sweet, delicious, victory. It’s unlikely that it will happen, but one can still hope.
With repeat viewings running rampant (I’m still not done) and word of mouth spreading like wildfire, the film will undoubtedly leave its mark on the box office community in a big way.
I’ll bet Joss Whedon’s phone is blowing up right now.
THE AVENGERS is currently in theaters. See it for a seventh time!
