I guess there's always room for some redemption. After writing the franchise-killing THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 starring Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger, Sony has tapped writer Roberto Orci to pen a new SPIDER-MAN spinoff.
The new spinoff will not take place within the Disney-owned MCU films but is instead being developed under the newly developing Sony Spider-verse that includes VENOM & the upcoming MORBIUS & VENOM 2. It's not known which character he's taking on for his spinoff but there are plenty of options with characters such as Kraven The Hunter, Nightwatch, Silk, and Silver and Black. All of these characters full under the Sony-owned Spider-Man properties and there are many others to choose from as well. Sony’s Executive Vice President of Production Palak Patel will oversee the new film, alongside the rest of Sony’s Spider-Man output.
As a writer, Orci as worked on a mixed bag of projects. His past work includes the rebooted STAR TREK trilogy, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 & the first two TRANSFORMERS films, often alongside writing partner Alex Kurtzman. In the world of television Orci has penned projects such as Sleepy Hollow, Alias, Hawaii Five-0, Scorpion & Fringe. I personally dig his television projects, with Alias, Fringe & Sleepy Hollow being highlights.
Orci missed the mark a bit with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 which tried to do too much because it was trying to function as its own film while clumsily establishing a movie universe that was doomed to fail because it wasn't given the proper room to breathe. This issue seemed to have more to do with intense studio interference and less about how the film was written so I'm ok with giving Orci another shot.
What SPIDER-MAN spinoff do YOU think Orci is taking on?
