The Shudder streaming service is on a spree of acquiring films that will be screening later this month at FrightFest in London, and the latest in the line-up is the “chilling French horror fantasy” The Advent Calendar. Shudder will be releasing The Advent Calendar exclusively in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand in December of 2021, just in time for holiday viewings.
Written and directed by Patrick Ridremont (Dead Man Talking), The Advent Calendar is described as being “ornate and elegant”. The film stars Eugénie Derouand of Paris Police 1900 as
Eva, an ex-dancer, who is now living in a wheelchair, unable to walk. When her friend Sophie gives her an old wooden antique advent calendar before Christmas, she realizes each window contains a surprise that triggers repercussions in real life. Some of them are good, but most of them are bad, really bad. Now Eva will have to choose between getting rid of the calendar or walking again – even if it causes death and destruction to everyone she holds dear around her.
Derouand is joined in the cast by Honorine Magnier (Tomorrow Is Ours), who plays Eva’s friend Sophie.
A batch of first-look images from The Advent Calendar can be seen below. Most of them focus on Eugénie Derouand, who starts off quite clean but doesn’t appear to end up that way. Then there’s a couple images involving a freaky little wooden man.
This movie looks and sounds interesting to me, so I’ll be sure to check it out once it’s available to watch on Shudder.
Other Shudder acquisitions that will be showing at FrightFest include Mickey Keating’s Offseason, starring Jocelin Donahue, Joe Swanberg, and Richard Brake, and the religious horror film The Last Thing Mary Saw, which stars Stefanie Scott, Isabelle Fuhrman, and Rory Culkin.
